Facilitation

Facilitation is a voluntary process whereby an independent third party assists conflicting parties to manage their discussions or negotiations, often dealing with complex issues with a range of different interest groups. The subject of the discussion could range from solving a problem to designing a new structure such as a consultative forum or managing the implementation of a major enterprise at local and national levels. The parties choose a neutral facilitator, or a number of facilitators (sometimes up to four). They agree on the objectives and scope of the exercise and the facilitator/s manage the process, and the parties agree the outcome within the process framework.
